"A New Icon of Public Libraries? - The Main Library in
Seattle
City Librarian Ms. Deborah Jacobs, Seattle Public Library and Architect Mr. Joshua Ramus, principal, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)

City Librarian Ms. Deborah Jacobs, Seattle Public Libraries introduces the process behind the building. How did the involvement and ideas of the library staff, the political process and society impact influence the creation of a brand new and spectacular main library i Seattle?
Focusing on the concept of the building Architect Mr. Joshua Ramus, partner at the famous Dutch Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) will be speaking on ideas and philosophy that has shaped the construction.
OMA is also behind a future main library of Oslo.

Over the next decades, pervasive computing will contribute to fundamental changes of our everyday life. Information and communication technology will be integrated in everything and new information tools and structures will be developed.
Professor Mr. Kaj Groenbaek presents the latest research in his field presenting some of the vast opportunities that lie in pervasive computing. How may the physical library of the future benefit from these? How do we create an attractive library environment that also encourages the cultural proces and lifelong learning?
The Centre for Interactive Spaces is developing technologies and new ways of working that support sharing of knowledge across disciplines and projects as well as between university based research groups and partners from private enterprises.

14.30 – 16.30 Workshop: From “
What is” to “What may be” – transformation of small libraries
For most public libraries in the Nordic countries reality looks nothing like the spectacular constructions of Seattle and Vienna.
Architect MAA Mr. Kim Holst Jensen partner at Schmidt, Hammer & Lassen and Architect MAA Mr. Claus Bjarrum from Claus Bjarrum Arkitekter A/S each offers their view on prospects and possibilities for smaller libraries.
As moderator Director Mr. Jens Lauridsen, Taarnby Library challenges participants to discuss the future for smaller libraries. Is it possible to “change face” without changing building?

15.00 – 17.00 Excursion to Centre for Interactive Spaces
Participants are invited on a tour at what has been called “the world’s leading centre of pervasive computing”. Located in IT-City Katrinebjerg the cooperation between university research, society interest and private businesses provides a synergetic environment for invention and experiment.
The centre develops new concepts and technology for pervasive computing based on a broad spectrum of media and equipment.
The labs are a concrete way of encouraging cooperation across traditional boundaries and thus supports the development of mutual understanding and strengthens the basis for creativity.

15.30 – 17.30 Workshop: Interactions – the children’s library
The future children’s library faces a generation accustomed to a multitude of opportunities and media combinations. How does the children’s library make essence interact with element in order to appeal to children’s ability to combine and desire to explore?
IT-consultant and librarian Mr. Jannik MulvadAarhus Public Libraries introduces ideas of “The Interactive Children’s Library” - a project exploring pervasive computing in the children’s library. Librarian Ms. Tone Lunden, Hjoerring Library, project manager of "The Children's library of the Future",focuses on ideas interacting with form – why do the libraries need to change expression and how do we support children’s diverse abilities to experience and communicate?
As moderator Chief of the Regional Library of Halland Kerstin Grum challenges speakers and participants to discuss future possibilities and new choices in the children’s library. 

Workshop is held at the Main Library – 5 minutes walk from the Concert Hall Aarhus. Co-ordinator Ms. Mette K. Jensen will guide the participants from the Concert Hall to the Main Library

A joyous evening at the Concert Hall Aarhus for participants and speakers. After a gourmet dinner with wine and music the bar opens and the band plays on!
