Info Island DK is an virtual house mediating digital content situated in Second Life, a 3-dimensional online world. At Info Island.dk you can get an introduction to Second Life, participate in events, ask a librarian and much more. The house is run by Danish public libraries and is an open and free service to everybody.
"We have built a beautiful house on an island filled with exciting offers and now we will explore the possibilities for mediating library services in a new and interactive way – and we think this is exciting and fun", states aldermen for Culture and Citizens' Services Flemming Knudsen, member of Aarhus City Council, the Municipality of Aarhus.
The aim of Info Island.dk is to create an open, virtual environment, where we can exchange knowledge and learn from each other. Info Island should be a place, where libraries and other interested parties can present and mediate content and explore new possibilities. We wish to create a virtual framework for experiences, information and mutual learning.
The public libraries in Copenhagen, Gladsaxe, Køge, Randers, Viborg and Aarhus, together with The Danish Library Centre and the 3D company FutureCom Aarhus are partners in the project. The project has received funding from the Danish Library Agency to establish a virtual library in Second Life; a library with staff, events, information, competence development – and not least interactivity.
