Chief Executive Officer Christine MacKenzie, Yarra-Melbourne
Regional Library Corporation, Australia
The role of public libraries is changing fundamentally as we move
into a new age of technology, and a new digital lifestyle. Web 2.0
promises to make the web a way of life and touch every aspect of
our lives.
Increasingly people are interacting and participating on the
internet and becoming creators, not simply consumers.
Libraries are starting to use these technologies to engage their
users as well as to create content in areas such as local history
and local writing and so assist in the development of connected
and inclusive communities.
This presentation will discuss how Yarra Plenty Regional Library
is positioning itself for the future and what some of the possibilities
might be.

Manager of the Cultural Service, Somerset County Council,
United Kingdom
This paper will look at national, regional and local partnership
initiatives in England and the changes and innovations which
they have created. As the grape loses its skin the flesh will
reveal the truth about Framework for the Future (the national
strategic plan for public libraries) and details of some exciting
local service initiatives.
14.30 - 15.00Public Libraries and Social Capital
Professor Ragnar Audunson, Oslo University College, Norway
Can public libraries play any role in generating social capital
and promoting integration and activities in local communities?
Is this a new mission or an old concept that needs to be
innovated in the multicultural society?
The research project PLACE - Public libraries Arenas for
citizenship – is researching these issues and Professor
Ragnar Audunson, Oslo University Collage and project manager
of PLACE, will discuss these issues in his paper.
15.00 - 15.30Coffee break - Visit Exhibition and Poster Sessions
15.30 - 16.00User centred innovation
Flemming Vang Sparsø (Senior Scientist), Danico A/S
Danisco A/S is a world leading supplier of food ingredients and has as
such an interest in how consumers think and feel about food in order
to help our customers, the global food industry, to become better at
fulfilling the unmet needs of the consumers. Extreme users of food
ingredients like chefs working with molecular gastronomy can be an
important inspiration for a company like Danisco, as their focus is very
much on the taste and perceived quality of the food.
The presentation will give insights into how Danisco has worked both
with the latent needs of the consumers and with the dream of a chef
to create and serve a plate of air.
